Monticello Plantation

This was Thomas Jefferson’s home and property in Northern Virginia.

The Whitney Plantation

This was a place where enslaved workers lived and worked the land in Wallace, Louisiana, before the Civil War. At the time Smith visited, it was a museum.

Angola Prison

This is a penitentiary located a few hours from New Orleans and is named after the former slave plantation that occupied the land.

Blandford Cemetery

This is a Confederate graveyard in Petersburg, Virginia. The remains of about 30,000 soldiers are buried there.

Galveston Island

This is a small piece of land off the coast of Southeast Texas. It is believed to be where General Gordon Granger made the announcement that slavery had ended.

New York City

This is a large metropolitan area where the Hudson River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Smith took a “walking tour on slavery and the Underground Railroad” (207) there.
