• The following version of this book was used to create this Lesson Plan: Smith, Clint. How the Word is Passed. Little, Brown and Company. 2021. Hardcover.

• In the Author’s Note, Smith explained that the visits he described in the book took place between October 2017 and February 2020.

• He captured quotations with a digital recorder.

• Some names were changed to protect the privacy of individuals.

• He commented that although the book was focused on the places “where the story of slavery in America lives on, the land upon which many of these historical sites sit belonged to Indigenous communities before it belonged to anyone else” (xiii).
