Objective

Part I: Section 1 | Part I: Section 2

In the classical definition of tragedy, the hero's difficulties must come as a direct result of their own character flaws. In these introductory sections, Dubus acquaints us with Behrani and Kathy, and we see some of the characteristics that might foreshadow trouble to come. Today's objective is to identify tragic flaws in each protagonist, and to predict what effect those flaws may have on the story. In your notebook, save each day's responses so that you can add to them as you learn more.

Lesson

1. Partner or small group discussion: Behrani is dealing with racism and discrimination, both in his own mind and in those around him. Find as many examples as you can and list them on paper.
