Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1 "Dudley Demented" | Chapter 2 "A Peck of Owls")

In the first two chapters, Harry is back in Little Whinging with his biological/foster family. There is a great deal of tension in the household over the differences between the Dursleys and Harry. In this lesson we will cover the concept of Family Values vs. Individuality.

Lesson

1) Class discussion:

Divide your whiteboard into two sections, and have two volunteers come up front to write the class' suggestions on the board. Label the two halves: Dursleys/Harry. In Harry Potter's life, what are the values the Dursleys seem to hold? What aspects of Harry's life seem to conflict with that? How does Harry express his individuality?

2) Groups:

When the dementors attack, Harry is nearly overcome by the conflict of his home life. In groups, discuss why the challenge between meeting family expectations and expressing his individuality has caused...
