Section 1: "A Special Tree" and "The School Among the Pines"

• The first story in the anthology, "A Special Tree," begins in the Himalayan foothills, with six-year-old Rakesh walking home from the bazaar, eating cherries.
• The cherries come from Kashmir, because the Himalayan soil is too rocky and the wind is too cold for fruit trees.
• Rakesh lives with his grandfather "on the outskirts of Mussoorie," near where a forest of "oak and deodar" begins (1).
• His parents live on and work a farm 50 miles away, in a village without a school.
• Rakesh has lived with his grandfather since he started school.
• When he gets to his grandfather's cottage, he offers his grandfather one of the three remaining cherries and then eats the last two...
