Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-11)

Objective

The objective of this lesson is to examine Erpenbeck's life and writing. Erpenbeck's first novella was published in 1999. She has authored other works and has been awarded the International Booker Prize.

Lesson

Class Discussion: What is Erpenbeck's writing process? Where does Erpenbeck get inspiration for her writing? What role does research play in her writing? How does she balance research and facts and telling a story? How has her upbringing in East Germany affected her writing? How does she believe writing creates connections? Why does she believe curiosity is important for a writer? What advice does she have for aspiring writers?

Activity: Divide the students into small groups. Have each group create a chart or poster that shows these things: books Erpenbeck has written, any awards she won for writing, what critics say about her writing, and what the different genres in which she writes.
