Objective

The Prologue and Chapter 1 introduce the girls' history with the pants. The objective of this lesson is to examine the importance of the pants.

Lesson

1) Class discussion: What are "the pants?" What do the pants look like? Where did the pants come from? What do the girls do with the pants each summer? What happens at the end of summer? Why did the girls use the pants the first summer? What makes this summer different? How does Carmen relate to the pants? How does Lena relate to the pants? How does Bee relate to the pants? How does Tibby relate to the pants?

2) Pair work: In pairs, students will create a poster that defines what the pants are/mean. Each poster should feature the outline of the pants and some way to graphically represent the information presented. Pairs will share their posters with the class.
