From the first chapter it seems that danger is lurking on the island. What is the danger? How real is the danger? Why is it never discussed out loud? Why are the kids shielded from information about danger?

Is there a link between learning and the arts? Describe each daughter and the mother and their unique artistic talents. Who teaches the children about art? How is learning about art enhanced once the family arrives in the States?

Once the family moves to America, what kind of life do the parents dream of for their daughters? With that in mind, why do they want to return the girls to the island every summer to find husbands?
