• In the outside upper corner of the first page of each chapter, a Petri dish is pictured.

• Chapter 1's Petri dish contains one organism, and these organisms multiply by a factor of two with each chapter.

• Eventually, the organisms become too numerous to count, and by Chapter 15, they have begun to spill out of their containing dishes, down the far margins of the pages.

• Chapter 1, "Tuesday, November 2, 11:55 a.m.," opens at lunchtime at private school Woodridge Academy, in Heath Cliff, Pennsylvania.
