Objective

Aung San Suu Kyi creates a backdrop for the reader about the history and culture of Burma. The purpose of this lesson is to expand upon the information in the book and gain a better understanding of the context of Freedom from Fear and Other Writings.

Lesson

1. Class discussion. Ask students to point out on a large map where Burma is located. Have students list facts they know about this region and identify questions to address in learning more about this country. The information can be listed on a blackboard or flip chart.

2. In-class activity. Divide the class into pairs. The pairs will select one aspect of Burma, such as history, government, geography, economy, or culture.
