Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)

Objective

It is important for students to access some prior knowledge before they begin reading so that they can build a connection with the text more easily. The objective of this lesson is for the students to analyze, evaluate an hypothesize using the title of the book in order to access prior knowledge.

Lesson

1.) Journal Assignment: The class begins with a free writing session in order to get the the student's minds focused on what they are about to read. Given the title of the book, what do you think it is about? What type of literary genre might the book fall into? Why?

2.) Class Discussion: The class has a discussion regarding the free writing exercise and the title of the book. What is the possible significance of a milk carton? Given the cover art and the title do you think this book is a mystery? Why...
