Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:
Essay Topic 1
Thievery is a common theme in the Elder Edda. There are many lays and poems that contain tales of thievery among family as well as among enemies. Discuss the theft of treasures from family members versus fallen enemies. Which is the worst crime: stealing from your kin of from a man that you killed? Discuss the moral and practical implications of theft.
Essay Topic 2
The Eddas can become quite confusing due to multiple spellings or variations of the same name. For example, Odin might be known as Odhinn, Woden, Valfathir, Father, Wise One, High One, etc. Give examples of other people/groups that may use alternate spellings or titles. Why is it a common occurrence? In what other cultures does this occur? Give examples from other cultures, as well.

In many of the Eddas, people are turned into or are approached by talking animals. In some cases, people learn to communicate with certain animals by drinking blood or performing other rites. Choose one of the following: Write about the metaphors involved in using birds, such as eagles and ravens, in the Eddas OR how a person or god could be turned into an animal as a punishment, curse or lesson to be learned.
