Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:
Essay Topic 1
The Eddas can become quite confusing due to multiple spellings or variations of the same name. For example, Odin might be known as Odhinn, Woden, Valfathir, Father, Wise One, High One, etc. Give examples of other people/groups that may use alternate spellings or titles. Why is it a common occurrence? In what other cultures does this occur? Give examples from other cultures, as well.
Essay Topic 2
Many, even gods, sought answers to questions through prophecy. The Seeresses, Valkyries and other prophets were able to offer advice and even glimpses into the past and future. Discuss the importance of prophecy regarding love and battle. Were the prophets revered or shunned? Who was most likely to visit a prophet?
Essay Topic 3
As in most literature, love triangles are often the cause of pain and death. The same is true in the Eddas. In some cases, there is no actual infidelity, only the desire to have another's mate for your own. Discuss the moral implications of thought versus deed in regards to infidelity.
