Objective

Chapter 1

The need is a powerful source inside that Dexter that must be fulfilled. The objective of this lesson is to analyze the need and to see how Dexter fulfills the need.

Lesson

1) Class discussion: Chapter 1 opens with the narrator speaking about the need. What is the need? What is calling out to the need inside the narrator? How does the need control Dexter? When does this need come alive? What fuels the need? What is the author revealing to the reader by introducing the need in the very beginning of the novel?

2) Partner discussion: Explain how the need feeds the Dark Passenger. Is the Dark Passenger and the need the same? Explain.

3) Individual assignment: In a journal entry, discuss the following: How do you think the need is going to affect the narrator in the coming chapters?
