Objective

Objective: This lesson can be used as a pre-reading lesson. The objective is to get to know Sarah Orne Jewett, the novel's author.

1) Have the students do a bit of independent Internet research on Sarah Orne Jewett's biography. When was the author born? Where was she born? Which aspects of her life were like the community depicted in the novel? How did her schooling affect her later work as a writer? What else did she write?

2) Have students prepare and deliver presentations that include the information they found out during their research on Sarah Orne Jewett. If desired, the class can be divided into groups, each of which could be responsible for presenting a different aspect of the author's biography.

3) Create a poster for the class about the author. The class can decide who should draw the picture of the author (use pictures from the biography research...
