Today's lesson introduces the class to the book and author. Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) was an American poet who lived a largely reclusive life, and less than a dozen of her poems were published during her lifetime. Dickinson's style of poetry strayed from the typical poetry of her time. Notable qualities for study include short lines, use of unconventional capitalization and punctuation, and lack of titles. Today's class overviews the author's life and introduces the syllabus for the study of Dickinson's poetry.
