1. What are Valentine's major objectives that are introduced in the Prologue? What is Valentine's history with the Clave?

Valentine plans to use two specific instruments to raise an army to defeat the Clave, the governing body of the Shadowhunters. Valentine had set out with this objective years earlier and had taken a group of other Shadowhunters with him on his original mission, including Luke, Maryse and Robert Lightwood, and Jocelyn, his wife who is also Clary's mother. The plan had fallen apart and most of the Shadowhunters punished on some level.

2. Describe Jace's family history. Who did Jace believe to be his father?

Jace believes at this point in the series that he is Valentine's son, though the reader begins to realize that isn't true by the end of this book. Jace believed he was Jace Wayland, son of Michael Wayland. In truth, Michael had died years earlier and Valentine had taken Michael's place, raising Jace as his own.
