Objective: Section 1 In Section 1, Truman and the woman are introduced as friends even though they are separated by numerous years and are related. Truman's story tells the reader how the woman touched his life in many ways. This lesson will discuss the friendship between Truman and the woman.

1) 1)Class Discussion: Bring up the point that in the story Truman would prefer to refer to the woman as his friend instead of an older lady or as a relative. Ask students for reasons why they think Truman saw the friendship ties as more important than the ties of his bloodline with the woman. What benefit does the friendship have to the woman? What benefit does the friendship have to Truman? Do you think that one person is more dependent on the friendship than the other? Who? Why or why not?
