Objective
Objective: Act 1, Scene 1 As the play opens, the reader is introduced to the setting, a small town called Cheapside, which is a historical place that carried a lot of significance in London. The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the setting of Cheapside and to discuss how the setting of a story can affect the reaction an audience has to it.
1) Divide the class into groups of 3 or 4 students to research the historical city of Cheapside. Where in London is it located? What is Cheapside known for during the 17th century? Have each group give a five-minute presentation of their findings.
2) As a class, compare and contrast the legacy of the time that Cheapside had with the legacy that London as a whole had. What is the same about these legacies? What is different? Is there anything surprising about this comparison?
