Objective

Objective: Author: Athol Fugard (born 11 June 1932) is a South African playwright, novelist, actor, and director who writes in English, best known for his political plays opposing the South African system of apartheid. To being our study of Boeman and Lena, we will first introduce the class to the playwright, his works, his history, and major themes.

1) Class Discussion: Introduce the class to the play Boesman and Lena, and its playwright, Athol Fugard. Boesman and Lena was written in 1969 by the South African playwright Athol Fugard. This play is set in South Africa and, like most of Fugard's plays, is centered on the theme of apartheid and the world that is enslaved by its wake.
Give students a brief introduction to the playwright before students break for independent research.
