Essay Topic 1
People have different reactions to the first encounter with the natives in Chapter 9. Select three characters and explain what their different reactions to the natives reveal about each character's experience or disposition.
Essay Topic 2
Samuel struggles with a series of internal conflicts in the novel (e.g. on how to treat Richard, on whether to divulge Henry's secret about the food rations, and whether to steal the baby Virginia).
