Essay Topics
Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:
Essay Topic 1
At the heart of the novel is the theme of a clash of cultures. Analyze the ways in which the English and the natives antagonize one another, and trace how this relationship changes over time. Who are the main players responsible for this change? Do you think this clash was inevitable? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.
Essay Topic 2
Choose a theme from the novel (i.e. cooperation, clash of cultures, adventure, survival) and identify 4-5 places in the text where that theme is demonstrated by the author. In addition to identifying the individual moments, explain how the author develops the theme over the course of the novel as a whole.
