Preface

In the Preface to "Black Dogs", the story of Jeremy as a lonely, lost man is introduced. Although both he and his sister, Jean, were orphaned at a young age, it appears that Jean has adapted to their situation in a very different way. Their different personalities will be observed.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: Quiet Jeremy takes his niece, Sally, under his wing, as she does not get much parenting or love from Jean and Harper. Jean, on the other hand, is full of rage, constantly arguing with Harper and, at times, seeming to enjoy it. Discuss Jeremy and Jean's ways of coping with life. Why does Jean fight so much and ignore her daughter? Why doesn't Jeremy get involved in the arguments?
