Susan Linda's mother is the first racist character that is introduced in the story. How does this set up prejudice as a theme in the story? What does Betsey think about Susan Linda's mother's prejudice? Why does she feel detached from it? What other instances of racism does Betsey feel detached from?

Essay Topic 2

How does the author use dialect to convey a message about the characters? What message is conveyed? Why is dialect important to the story? Would the quality of literature change if the unique dialect were stripped from the story?

Essay Topic 3

Each person in the Brown family has their own distinct role in the family unit. Analyze each character's or group of characters' role in the family. For example, how does Jane contribute to the success of the family? How does she cause conflict? Analyze the ways in which the other characters do this as well.
