Objective

The objective of this lesson is to analyze the moral dilemma faced by Scranton Roy in Part I: Chapter 1. Scranton Roy, a soldier in the cavalry, encounters a chaotic situation in an Ojibwe village where violence is erupting. In the midst of the chaos, he makes a split-second decision to raise his weapon and harm innocent people. However, he later witnesses a dog carrying a child on its back, and he feels a sense of redemption and decides to follow them, leaving the village behind. Students will evaluate the ethical choices he made in response to the challenging circumstances.
