Objective

The idea of using animal totems is a practice of many native cultures, but it is now moving into modern society and modern spirituality. Today's objective is to discuss whether it seems appropriate to use a practice from a past culture.

Lesson

1. Have each student make a list of other cultural practices which seem to have been brought into modern life.

2. In smaller groups, have students discuss whether they think it's right for people to use spiritual practices of other groups outside their own.

3. As a class, have the students discuss the benefits and the disadvantages of borrowing from the cultures of other groups and areas. Should native groups be displeased with this practice?

4. Homework: Have each student choose one native practice or belief they would like to add to their life. Why?
