Chapters 1-2

The main characters of the novel are introduced in these early chapters of the novel. The objective of this lesson will focus on character.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: Discuss the characters that have been introduced in the first two chapters of the novel. Ask students to list each character and discuss what is already known about them, focusing on traits that might foreshadow the part each character will play as the novel continues to develop. Discuss ways in which the author has introduced each character to the reader and how this introduction also shows the reader conflicts that have or will arise as the plot develops.

2) Character: Discuss in an essay or with a partner character. Define character. Discuss how a character might develop in a novel and how the author describes the character, creating a fully dimensional character.
