Maralyn left her watch on deck at 7 a.m. on March 4, 1973. As she put her hand on Maurice to wake him, they felt a crack and a jolt. They heard what sounded like a gun going off. Books fell off the shelves. Cutlery flew. The boat tore and splintered.

A whale was next to them in the ocean. It twisted and writhed. It appeared to have risen from the depths of the ocean and broken the surface right under their boat, damaging it.
