1. What is the setting of the novel, and how does it affect the storyline immediately?

The novel is set in the 1800s at the exclusive Windfield school in England. The fact that it is an exclusive school lets the reader know right away that the story will be about wealth and power. The school is private, but all religions are tolerated, so religion will most likely be an issue in the story as well.

2. What secret is established in the Prologue?

The boys escape detention and head to the swimming hole. The younger boys that are already there are terrorized by the older Micky and Edward. Peter retaliates for his clothes being thrown into the water by throwing a rock at Edward and hitting him in the head. Edward retaliates. Peter drowns. The reader is not given the complete facts as we are led to believe that Micky does not tell the whole truth.
