In October 1969 two teams of computer scientists, one at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the other at the Bell laboratories in Menlo Park, California, linked computers over telephone lines to operate as a single system. The U.S. military had sponsored the research, seeking to establish a national communications network that would continue to operate even if part of the system were disabled or destroyed in a nuclear attack.
