Spectacular Things is a 2025 work of realistic fiction by Beck Dorey-Stein. It is largely set in the Maine town of Victory, but substantial portions of the text are also set on the campus of the University of California Los Angeles. It follows the lives of the three Lowe women: mother Liz, and sisters Mia and Cricket. All three women are extremely talented at soccer, and they must at various times manage the world of soccer with life as a family. Themes include the ways children follow in their parents’ footsteps, the degree to which sacrifice is a virtue, the ways that everybody needs other people, the degree to which scandal infects the soccer community, and how, ultimately, success without companionship can feel empty.
