All Aunt Hagar's Children Overview

Edward P. Jones' All Aunt Hagar's Children is a collection of 14 stories, all featuring primarily Black ensemble casts, that takes place in and around the suburbs of Washington, D.C. throughout the twentieth century. Although the stories are not connected to one another, they often deal with similar or rhyming familial structures, situations, and themes. Indeed, the collection explores themes of marriage and family relations, infidelity, classism, racism, and heritage.
