Summary

Chapter 39 begins with a mission to Camp Independence, where the platoon is to retrieve a satellite dish and install it on the roof of the outpost for an unknown purpose. Rana calls to warn them to stay away from the paved road by Camp Independence. Jack informs the battalion officer that an attack is forthcoming along Route Madison, and the patrol stops to wait until the way is cleared. They see an explosion across the desert and realize the Army Corps of Engineers has hit the IED meant for them in a mine resistant vehicle, only injuring a few soldiers inside. Jack contemplates Snoops words that Rana had saved their lives.
