Summary

At the beginning of Chapter 22 Jack sits on the smoking patio, waiting for Alia and reminiscing about his religious upbringing, college, and the military. While listening to the morning’s prayer calls from Ashuriyah, he hears Haitham calling him from the perimeter fence. Jack walks over and radios for Snoop, who arrives and translates that Haitham is worried for his nephew Barbie Kid, who is apparently being mistreated by Iraqi police.

Haitham reiterates his desire to be locked up at Camp Bucca, and explains that he has been hiding because the sheiks of Ashuriyah are hunting him. Haitham says that he used to work in Sheik Ahmed’s house as a servant during the time of Shaba. Shaba had won the Sheik’s favor and was to marry the Sheik’s only daughter, Rana.
