Summary

Beginning with Chapter 17 and continuing throughout the remainder of the novel, the events are from Hetty's perspective.

In Chapter 17, Julia wakes Hetty, saying they are needed for Boat Shift. Julia says Welch and Headmistress are apparently angry and Hetty tries to reassure herself that no one knows she and Reese left the campus. While Julia is helping Hetty find her warm clothing for the trip, she also hands her a pistol. Hetty asks the purpose and Julia makes it clear she does not trust Welch. She fears Welch has “lost it.” Hetty notes that she would usually have not been keeping secrets from Welch, but her opinion has changed. Hetty is very aware of the gun she has hidden under her coat so that Welch cannot see it. Welch is silent all the way across the island, making Hetty more uneasy. The boat...
