Sal is a thirteen-year-old girl and the narrator of this story. Her parents named her Salamanca, thinking it the name of the Indian tribe to which her great-great-grandmother belonged. Actually, the tribe's name is Seneca, but her parents don't discover the error until after her birth, and by then, they've gotten used to Salamanca.
Her middle name is Tree, because her mother holds it as a thing of such beauty that she makes it a part of her daughter's name. She actually wanted to get specific and use Sugar Maple Tree, but it would be too long. Only her mother and her grandparents call her Salamanca. Most others call her Sal, and some boys call her Salamander for fun.
Sometimes Sal can be ornery and stubborn as an old donkey. Sal is afraid.....
