Chapter 43 Summary

Instead of jail, the sheriff drives her to Coeur d'Alene. The sheriff gives her a lengthy and severe lecture about driving without a license and makes her promise that she won't drive until she's sixteen.

She asks him to tell her about the bus accident; whether he was there that night. He says it's not good to know all the details. He can't quite recall her mother among all the people, but he remembers seeing her father come into the station. When she asks him about Mrs. Cadaver, he is surprised that she knows her. Nine hours after the bus rolled over and everyone despairing at the endless stretchers of bodies, people see a moving hand and everyone shouts. He glances at her. "I wish it had been your mother's hand."
