Chapter 39 Summary

The next morning, Phoebe calls Sal, begging her to come over. She needs a witness. She's disgusted at the way her father and her sister are acting. They spent the whole night and the morning cleaning the house. After looking around, her father says that maybe it looks too good and her mother would think that they could function without her, so he messes things up a little. Her father is put out with Phoebe for not helping.

Sal doesn't want to be a witness but feels guilty for running away the day before, so she agrees to come. Mr. Winterbottom is a wreck. He walks around in circles in the yard and changes his shirt twice. Finally a taxi pulls up outside. From the kitchen, they hear Prudence opening the door. We hear.....
