Chapter 35 Summary
The road through Montana is all mountains. Sal feels torn in two pieces. Half of her is ogling the beautiful scenery. The other half is a quivering pile of jelly as they negotiate the curves. Gram sits quietly with her hands folded on her lap, but she's not sleeping despite not having slept all night. She wants to hear about Phoebe, and Sal wants to finish the story.
The day after Mr. Birkway's visit to Phoebe's house, Phoebe and Sal put their plan in motion. They will track down Sergeant Bickle's son and discover the whereabouts of Phoebe's mother. Sal doesn't think Sergeant Bickle's son is a lunatic or that he will lead them to Phoebe's mother, but she gets caught up in the plan. Just like Phoebe, she's ready to take action.
