Chapter 28 Summary

When they see the first sign for the Black Hills, the whispers have changed and once again, commands, rush, hurry, rush. They have been in South Dakota too long and there are only two days to go.

Gramps is taken aback at her suggestion of skipping the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore. Sal is anxious. Today's the eighteenth, and it's the fifth day. Gramps begins to say that they have all the time in the world but stops at a look from Gram. Instead, he promises to be quick.

Sal knows that they won't make it to Idaho in time. She even thinks about sneaking off and hitchhiking but is dizzy and sick at the thought of speeding, careening around the snaking curves down into Lewiston, Idaho.
