Sal has just finished telling her grandparents about the mysterious message when they pull off the freeway. As Gramps drives into Madison, Wisconsin, Gram comments that she's sorry for Mrs. Winterbottom, because she doesn't sound very happy. Gram talks about how hard it is to be a mother.
They drive around for a parking spot until they find one. Another car sees it, too, but Gramps is faster. When the other driver waves his fist, Gramps says, "I'm a veteran. See this leg? Shrapnel from German guns. I saved our country!" They don't have correct change for the parking meter, so Gramps writes a long note about his being a visitor from Bybanks, Kentucky and a World War II veteran. He'd like for the fair city of Madison to allow him to park in.....
