Chapter 9 Summary

Phoebe says that Mary Lou's family is not as civilized as hers is. Mary Lou Finney and Ben Finney, her cousin, are both in their classes at school. Ben Finney is living with Mary Lou's family temporarily. There's always at least one stray relative living at the Finneys' temporarily.

It is complete pandemonium at the Finneys' house. Mary Lou has an older sister and three brothers. Things are lying all over the place, boys are sliding down the banister, leaping over tables, talking with their mouths full, and interrupting everyone. Phoebe whispers to Sal that Mary Lou's parents don't seem to have much control over things, which Sal finds to be a rather prissy thing to say. Mr. Finney is lying in the bathtub with his clothes on.
