Chapter 8 Summary

As they leave Illinois, Sal again picks up the story of Phoebe. Her grandparents almost get into a fight when Gramps asks Gram whether Gloria really had a hankering for him. Gramps continues to tease Gram, saying that she's jealous.

One Saturday morning, Sal is at Phoebe's when they are invited over to Mary Lou Finney's house. Phoebe's parents are out, and her mother makes Phoebe promise to recheck all the doors and windows, even though she already did so herself. Mrs. Winterbottom says that one can never be too careful.

The doorbell rings. Standing on the porch is a young man who looks about seventeen or eighteen. He looks nervous. He asks whether the Winterbottoms live at the house. Phoebe closes the door for a minute and asks Sal whether the man looks like.....
