Chapter 4 Summary

Phoebe invites Sal to her house on the day she tells Sal that she's brave. It is great relief to Sal, because she does not want to eat at Margaret's again. Sal and her father eat at Margaret's three times a week.

They stop by Sal's house to call her father, who now sells farm machinery. He says he is happy that Sal found a new friend, but Sal thinks maybe that he's also happy to spend time alone with Margaret Cadaver. As they walk to Phoebe's house, Mrs. Partridge, Margaret's mother, who has been sitting on the porch, calls out to them. Phoebe does not want to meet her, but Sal affects an introduction. After touching Phoebe's face, she correctly guesses her age to be thirteen. Phoebe doesn't like the fact that Sal.....
