Chapter 3 Summary

This chapter returns to the day when Sal first meets Margaret and Phoebe, who lives next door. Margaret Cadaver goes out of her way to be nice to Sal, but Sal is in no mood to be sweet. She refuses to sit down and doesn't look at Margaret. Margaret wants Sal's father to tell her how the two met, but he knows that Sal doesn't want to hear about it.

Their new house is only two blocks away from Margaret's and very different from the old farmhouse. Everything seems small and concrete. Three days later, Sal starts school, where she meets Phoebe along with a few other new classmates. The kids are different here. They speak in quick, sharp bursts, dress in stiff, new clothes and wear braces. The girls wear their hair in.....
