Chapter 2 Summary

It is after all the adventures of Phoebe that her grandparents come up with the plan to drive from Kentucky to Ohio, pick up Sal, and drive two thousand miles west to Lewiston, Idaho. Her mother rests there. Gramps, her grandfather, has the ambition to see the whole country, and Gram, her grandmother, sees the trip as an opportunity to spend time with her only granddaughter, whom she calls chickabiddy. Her father lets her go; because he doesn't think his mother can read maps.

Sal's grandparents want to see her mother and know that Sal also wants to see her but has been afraid to. Sal's father has already seen her mother. He also knows that trouble seems to follow his parents whenever they get in a car, and having his daughter along will.....
