The story begins with Sal's narration of how she came to know her friend, Phoebe Winterbottom. Sal is a thirteen-year-old girl who has lived most of her life in Bybanks, Kentucky, in an old restored farmhouse. One year ago, her father picked up everything and drove with her three hundred miles straight north to Euclid, Ohio. That's when she meets a woman named Margaret and Phoebe, the girl who lives next door.
Sal's mother left Sal and her father one April morning. Since then, her father chips away at a plaster wall in the living room every night as he waits to hear from her.
