Summary

In Chapter 10, they begin to cast the Summoning. Kasia struggles until she gives up trying to recite everything exactly as Sarkan does. Sarkan had warned her that they could not stop in the middle and she finally finds a rhythm that complements his. As soon as they reach that spot, Kasia begins to struggle. Eventually, “the Wood stared back at me out of Kasia's face,” but Agnieszka can also see Kasia, though she was lost in the dark (140). The Summoning reveals Kasia's true situation but it also reveals Agnieszka's, and she sees the “secret jealousies” she felt for Kasia's skills (140). Both Agnieszka and Sarkan see Kasia's fear of being taken, which makes Sarkan pause for a second.
