Summary

In “Chapter 1,” the narrator follows a girl hunting and gathering in the woods. She talked to a person called Ash, who appears to be a younger brother, during this time. She looked for her mother who had left earlier to go hunting. She found her mother at the bottom of a hole, having fallen into it and broken her leg and ribs. The girl threw water and food down there and made a pulley to try and pull her mother out. She realized this would not be possible and slept next to the hole during the night. In the morning she left with Ash and the turkey her mother had caught, realizing she was dead.
