On December 13, Dr. Redmond Courtney is ready to tee off at the Palmetto Country Club golf course. He has few friends, so he is playing with a patient, a schizophrenic named Mario Groppo, and two engineers from the Boeing Company in Seattle. During one unusually good shot with a wedge, Groppo sends the ball deftly into the cup, and immediately the twelfth green blows up in the air with a brilliant orange plume, launching the flagstick like a flaming javelin along with Dr. Courtney who was holding the flag at the time. From some distance off comes a loud voice proclaiming, "Bon Voyage, Dr. Goosefucker!"
