Appearances

Appearances are important to many of the characters in this novel. Uncle Mo is the most obvious character to whom appearances are everything. Uncle Mo runs a candy/ice cream shop in which many children from the neighborhood tend to spend most of their afternoons. Everyone knows Uncle Mo and trusts him with their children since he has been in the same spot for more than thirty years, having served most of the children's parents as well. When it is learned that Uncle Mo is a fugitive from the law, everyone is shocked.
